Sources & methodology

Data source: the Transport for NSW Open Data Trip Planner API, called directly: stop_finder (resolves each station/stop) and departure_mon (planned vs. real-time departures), against api.transport.nsw.gov.au. Nothing on this page is modelled, extrapolated or sourced from anywhere else.

When we collect: weekdays only, during two peak windows: AM (6:30am to 10:00am) and PM (3:00pm to 7:00pm) Sydney time. Weekends and off-peak hours are never monitored, so they're not part of any figure here.

Adherence tiers (the realistic time needed to change services at an interchange, not a figure Transport for NSW publishes):

Collection to date: 1,078,715 measured trips, across 68 of 75 weekdays between 13 July 2026 and 24 October 2026 (7 weekdays with no data, almost always while the collecting PC was off).

This runs on a single local computer, not a server: collection stops whenever that PC is off and resumes only once it's back on, so coverage is never guaranteed to be continuous. The figures on this page are everything gathered so far, republished roughly once a month.

Executive Summary

Across 1,078,715 measured trips on Sydney trains and buses, one pattern holds steady: a single train line or bus route, judged purely on its own timetable, usually looks fine. It's the interchange, the moment a commute depends on one service meeting another, where that reliability consistently breaks down. A commute that requires a change fares measurably worse than either service does alone.

This project runs on one local PC, not a server, so it was never going to be able to promise continuous, uninterrupted collection. What it can do is use everything collected while it was running, 68 weekdays of it so far, to show the trend rather than a single day's snapshot. That's what the figures below now reflect.
